Ibiza Blog Sessions – Macaloon – One Night In Bossa

A lot has been said recently about Pacha and its moves away from pandering to the ‘Superstar Dj’ and i personally back them 100%. Today we continue to celebrate real music from Dj’s who don’t need 100K to open their laptop.

Today we speak to Andrew, i picked up on Andrews music through listening to a mix he posted on twitter and subsequently went through his mixcloud. Andrew has kindly done a mix for us and i managed to ask him a few questions.

Hi Andrew and thanks for taking the time to talk to me, and especially putting a mix together for the blog.

Firstly a bit about yourself, who are your musical inspirations when it comes to what you listen to? Is it a Dj, or maybe even a venue?

I’ve been into electronic music since around 97, from listening to the early Ministry of Sound ‘The Annual’ compilations and it all kind of went from there. I’m a big fan of DJs and live acts who have their own sound. Acts like Maya Jane Coles, Dubfire, Solomun and The Chemical Brothers. They are instantly recognisable when you hear a track or set from them. I also love DJ’s like Chris Liebing who really embrace technology to take their sets to the next level and blur the line between DJ and live act.

I like the ‘Live’ sets myself after first seeing Riccardo Ferri ‘Live’ in Meganite, so what was the inspiration for the mix you have done for us today?

I just tried to capture the sound of the island from the daytime beach action of Bora Bora through to peak time at Space. The goal was to represent these moments as well as I could and keeping the mix really fun and upbeat. For me, track selection is important, but the key is the way the tracks are programmed to make sure the mix builds nicely and flows well.

If someone was going to Ibiza this summer, and they could only go to one night, where would you tell them to go?

That’s a toughie! There are so many brilliant nights on the island, but it would probably be a toss-up between Ritchie Hawtin’s ‘Enter’ at Space or Solomun’s ‘Diynamic Neon Nights’ at Sankeys which were both highlights of last year. If I had to pick one night it would be Diynamic Neon Nights. It’s a great party, in a great club with people covered in neon paint and Solomun’s funky sound guarantees a fun night.

What’s been your most memorable night in Ibiza so far?

Being on the sunset terrace at Space for my first experience of ‘We Love…’ in 2007 was amazing. This was before the opening hours changed and dancing in the middle of the afternoon to great music with great friends is something I’ll never forget. Another great memory was from last year’s trip. For my birthday night we went to Enter, and between Dubfire, Magda and Nick Curly, there was nothing left of Space…Amazing.

You have the chance to host a party in Ibiza, where is it going to be and who would be playing alongside you?

It would have to be in Sankeys. It’s a great venue; low ceilings, a booming soundsystem, a club with real potential to be one of the best in the world. As for a line up, I’d love to play alongside Maya Jane Coles and Maceo Plex as I think they have a similar deep house style to me. I prefer nights with only a couple of acts on as this gives them more time to experiment during their sets.

Nice, i hope you put me on the guest list for that night 🙂

Are you going to Ibiza this year, and if so, whats are you looking forwards to?

I am, this will be my fifth year on the island. We had a really crazy one last year, out nearly every night so while we will still hit loads of big nights I’m looking forward to exploring the island a lot more. I’ve heard a lot about the fish shack in Talamanca so I hope to give that a try. Also, there have been a lot of changes on the island this year, lots of nights moving around and new venues like Bomba opening up, so I’m interested to see how this changes the dynamic.

Sunset Strip or Bora Bora?

Sunset strip. I think Bora Bora has lost it’s focus over the last few years and you can’t beat a sunset on the strip then a warm up mix at Mambo to start your night off..

If people wanted to hear more of your music, where do they need to go?

They can go to either mixcloud.com/macaloon or soundcloud.com/macaloon to check me out.. Cheers!

Thanks for speaking to me today Andrew and more so thanks for providing us with a great Ibiza Blog Session. Have a great trip to Ibiza this year, and it would be great to catch up with a review of your trip and tell us what the Fish Shack was like!
